My current go-to song is "The Bug Collector" by Haley Heynderickx, mainly because it has a calming effect on me. From the first notes, there is a sense of intrigue as the guitar gently leads into the song  for Heyndrickx to use her ethereal gentle voice. The song's title, "The Bug Collector,"  immediately conjures up images of someone diligently collecting and preserving delicate creatures which reminds me a lot of childhood and the innocence that comes with it. As the song unfolds, Heyndrickx's lyrics paint a vivid scene and explores the beauty found in the smallest and often overlooked aspects of life. The imagery of collecting bugs becomes a metaphor for cherishing small moments and memories.

The song "Death of a Phone Call" by Whatever Dad explores the theme of distance and the longing for human connection, particularly in a world where physical interactions were greatly limited. It captures the essence of the loneliness and longing that many experienced during the quarantine period, when social distancing and lockdown measures kept people apart from their loved ones. Through its heartfelt lyrics, "Death of a Phone Call" expresses the frustration and sadness of relying solely on technology to maintain relationships. The song acknowledges the hollow feeling that can come from constant video calls and messages, as they can never fully replace the warmth and depth of in-person connections. It served as a reminder that it was okay to feel lonely and that it was a shared experience felt by many around the world.

"Taylor Swift - Lavender Haze" is a song that may not fall within my personal music taste, but I can appreciate why it resonates with many listeners. Taylor Swift is a highly acclaimed and influential artist known for her ability to connect with her audience through her storytelling and relatable lyrics. "Lavender Haze" is likely no exception to this. One of Taylor Swift's strengths as a songwriter is her ability to capture and convey emotions with authenticity and vulnerability. Her lyrics often delve into personal experiences and touch upon universal themes that many people can relate to. "Lavender Haze" might tackle subjects such as love, heartbreak, or self-discovery, which are timeless and resonate with a wide range of listeners.

  2. Hey Colleen, I liked your picks of Haley Henderickz and Whatever Dad. I have never heard of these artists but I like how calming and relaxing they are. I like how simple the songs are too, where it is mostly just guitar and lyrics. Songs like these can be very simple, but provide a very deep and heartfelt feeling that goes along with the actual meaning of the song.

The media plays a significant role in shaping perceptions, and the indie music scene is no exception. Traditionally, women have often been objectified or portrayed through narrow archetypes, overshadowing their musical talents and contributions. However, the winds of change are blowing through this landscape. With the rise of feminist movements and a more inclusive approach, the media is gradually shifting its focus to embrace diversity and challenge gender stereotypes. When we examine the instrument choices within music ensembles, we may observe a certain degree of gender disparity. Historically, instruments such as guitar, bass, and drums have been associated with masculinity, while instruments like vocals, keyboards, and strings have been deemed more feminine. However, these gender associations are gradually dissolving as artists, regardless of gender, are fearlessly breaking barriers and forging their own paths. In recent years, we have witnessed a remarkable surge of talente...
